This is a common argument against those of us who believe the curse has been completely done away with in Christ.
Opponents would say that Genesis 3:16 says that "I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children" and therefore, since this has not been done away with, the curse is not gone.
But again, if the foundation is wrong, the rest of the building is going to be lopsided as well.
The death in the garden "IN THAT DAY THAT THEY ATE" was not physical. Had nothing to do with biology. It was a "FELLOWSHIP DEATH". They rejected God's Law, ate the fruit, and were kicked out of perfect fellowship with God. They were not created "immortal" because the very definition of the word immortal is: UNABLE TO DIE.
The New Heaven and New Earth is the same as the New Jerusalem. We see Old Covenant Jerusalem (the Mother of all Harlots) destroyed at the end of the book of Revelation and then IMMEDIATELY John sees this "NEW Jerusalem" ascending down as a BRIDE for God. It was at that point that God officially declared His dwelling again with men in perfect relationship and perfect sonship. So again, if this "New Heaven & Earth" hasn't yet come, then God doesn't dwell with men yet and nobody, yes nobody, has eternal life.
But did you know that Isaiah the prophet, when looking ahead and predicting the coming of this New Heaven and New Earth, actually predicts that at its coming, the curse of bringing forth children for trouble would be done away with? Check it out...
"For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;
And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind...For as the days of a tree, so shall be the days of My people, And My elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands....They shall not labor in vain, NOR BRING FORTH CHILDREN FOR TROUBLE; For they shall be the descendants of the blessed of the Lord, And THEIR OFFSPRING WITH THEM." Isaiah 65:17-23
Do you see the reversal of the child bearing mentioned there as coming with the New Heaven and new Earth, as in Gods new people? I sure do. But let's look further. Look how Paul describes this in Galatians chapter 4...
"For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh....For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to BONDAGE, which is Hagar— for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and CORRESPONDS TO JERUSALEM WHICH NOW IS, and is IN BONDAGE WITH HER CHILDREN." Galatians 4:22-25
Do you see that? Paul is connecting the Jerusalem which WAS EXISTING THEN, to BONDAGE. He is comparing the CHILDREN of the BONDWOMAN to the children of the FREEWOMAN.
The curse to me, speaks to the birth of children under bondage. Under the curse of the Old Covenant. This brought sorrow. This brought pain. This brought death. Paul even refers to it as "the ministry of DEATH and the ministry of CONDEMNATION" in 2 Corinthians chapter 3.
But again, look at what Paul says about the contrast to that in the New Heaven and Earth, in Christ, in the New Jerusalem. Remember, he is speaking to believers who have been given the sign or seal of their COMING inheritance, eternal life. They had NOT yet received it but would receive it at the Coming of the Lord and the consummation of the New Heaven and New Earth. **NOTICE THE LANGUAGE GOING BACK TO GENESIS 3.**
"My little children, for whom I TRAVAIL IN BIRTH AGAIN UNTIL CHRIST IS FORMED IN YOU." Galatians 4:19
Did you see that? SAME. EXACT. WORDS.
So when would the curse of bringing forth children in pain and sorrow be reversed according to Paul?
WHEN CHRIST WAS FORMED IN THEM.
Which happens to be what all the other disciples and apostles called "The Coming of the Lord".
Which also happens to be the point where salvation would be inherited. Eternal Life would be received. Immortality would inherited and death swallowed up.
Around AD55-60 Paul wrote...
"The Jerusalem which now is, is in bondage with her children—BUT the JERUSALEM ABOVE, IS FREE. Galatians 4:25-26
Jerusalem which NOW IS (around ad55)- Old Covenant Jerusalem
Jerusalem ABOVE (the one coming) - NEW JERUSALEM
It was always about bondage vs freedom.
Giving birth to children in the Old Covenant was giving birth to more bondage. Those who are under the New Covenant are FREE. Bondage has been removed. The curse is lifted in the New Jerusalem.
"Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.” So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman BUT OF THE FREE." Galatians 4:30-31
