Genesis 1:14 reads..
"And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years".
Well, what lights in the firmament do we know that we have? Mainly we have the sun and the moon.
Genesis says that these lights would be for "SIGNS, SEASONS, DAYS AND YEARS"
Now, we know that Israel observed feasts, special days, sabbaths, etc.
Doesn't this sort of make sense if indeed God is creating a Covenant people here in Genesis 1? It makes sense if He is calling a people out of a world of darkness, confusion, and disorder and He is bringing order and regulation to this people. He is bringing order to His Covenant people. Calling them out from a world of chaos and darkness and establishing stability with them.
Israel used these lights in the sky as a means to understand when they would celebrate certain feasts, days, sabbaths etc. This was how they kept track of it all.
When we get to the New Testament during the transition period out of that Old Heaven & Earth and into the New, we see Paul say the following to the believers in Christ.....
"So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a FESTIVAL or a NEW MOON OR A SABBATH, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. " Colossians 2:16-17
Again, they were coming out of that Old order of things and into the New order where Christ fulfills it all and He alone is the sabbath.
But what's amazing is what we read at the very end of Revelation in regard to these lights in the firmament. Look where they are in the New Heaven and Earth aka the New Jerusalem...
"And the city had NO NEED OF THE SUN OR OF THE MOON to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it" Revelation 21:23
Now why would this New Jerusalem (God's new people) have no need of the sun or the moon?
Because there are NO MORE FEASTS AND SABBATHS TO OBSERVE.
They are gone. The Old Heaven and Earth is gone. Fulfilled completely in Christ. In Him are all the promises yes and amen.
