This short study goes hand in hand with my study on the curse of bringing forth children for trouble. I would suggest reading both of them in order to see the full picture.
In Genesis 3, God is speaking of the curse and He says to Adam...
"Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground" Genesis 3:17-19
Again, this was the curse placed on the first heaven and earth for breaking the commandment of God in the garden. We see Isaiah predict the coming New Heaven and Earth in chapter 65 and look what he predicts as happening when this New Heaven and Earth (New Jerusalem) would come...
"For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;....I will rejoice in Jerusalem, And joy in My people! .........
They shall build houses and inhabit them; They shall plant vineyards and EAT THEIR FRUIT. They shall NOT build and ANOTHER INHABIT. They shall NOT plant and ANOTHER EAT;
For as the days of a tree, so shall be the days of My people,
And My elect shall long ENJOY THE WORK OF THEIR HANDS. THEY SHALL NOT LABOR IN VAIN." Isaiah 65:17-23
This is clearly the reversal of the toil and sweat ground curse. They will plant vineyards and ENJOY their fruit. As opposed to thorns and thistles, we see FRUIT.
They will build and not be invaded by others. Others won't come and steal their food. God's elect will long enjoy the work of their hands and they shall NOT labor in vain. Clearly showing that the curse has been undone.
In Genesis 3 we see "THORNS AND THISTLES", but in the New Heaven and Earth (New Jerusalem) what do we see?
"In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month." Revelation 22:4
We see LIFE GIVING FRUIT.
Again, a beautiful contrast from the bondage under the Old Heaven & Earth and Law to the freedom found in Christ, the New Heaven & Earth wherein righteousness dwells.
